AROMATHERAPY PREGNANCY MASSAGE
Pregnancy massage is very similar to a 'normal' massage. The overarching aims of both are very similar; to increase circulation and aid mobility, to relax the mind, body and soul and to ease tense muscles.
However pregnancy massage is specially tailored to meet the ever changing needs of each mummy to be. Pregnancy is a time of rapid change and so techniques are altered accordingly, this may even be as often each time you come for a treatment.
Aching muscles is something that most mums to be will experience; as your new posture develops the sciatic nerve can sometimes be compressed, this causes pain to be radiated throughout the lower back and often down the legs. As your muscles work harder still, toxins are released that ‘stick’ to muscles fibres, which in turn causes pain.
Yet massage is a suburb way to help relieve this discomforts; muscles are relaxed, pressure on nerves released and the circulation is increased thus moving on the toxins that have become stuck.
This massage is then enhanced further still by a unique blend of essential oils. The essential oil blend is bespoke for each lady and used specifically to help elevate the muscle aches and pains that you are experiencing. A few of the wonderful essential oils that have a wonderful effect on soothing aches and pains are Lavender, jasmine, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood, geranium and ylang ylang.
As your pregnancy develops and your baby grows, blood volume and body wight will of course increase. These increase put pressure on your hip, knee and ankle joints. This increase in pressure and so decrease in circulation often causes swelling.
Massage helps to stimulate the soft tissues to reduce this collection of fluids in swollen joints. By helping blood to flow into the legs, massage can reduce the chances of swelling, varicose veins and blood clots.
There are many essential oils that stimulate the circulation; patchouli, ginger and geranium to mention just a few and in conjunction with massage you can often see a profound effect on decreasing the oedema (swelling). This in turn reduces pain and stress levels, resting in a happy mummy to be and growing baby.
During pregnancy the body undergoes enormous hormonal changes, pregnancy massage during all three trimesters can be wonderfully beneficial. 'Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced to women’s prenatal care. This leads to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health.
In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (hormones associated with stress) were reduced, and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression).
These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight.
The evidence strongly suggests there are maternal and newborn health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.' - American Pregnancy Association, September 2nd 2016
Q & A:
What position will I be in during a massage?
You will have complete control over this and so be in a position that is comfortable for you. This may be in a slightly reclined position, but not flat on your back. However, you may prefer to be sitting leaning over a chair or lying on your side, what ever is best for you.
Will you massage my tummy?
The tummy is often massaged during a treatment as it can be very relaxing and the oils are fantastic for your stretching skin; baby loves it too, often moving and kicking away! But of course this is completely up to you, we can miss it out, do part or what ever you feel comfortable with and this of course may change on a treatment by treatment basis.
Will you always use essential oils?
When essential oils are being used by a full trained aromatherapist who has trained in working with pregnant women, they can add such a lot to the treatment. If you have certain oils that you love the aroma of then we can look to incorporating these into your treatment in some way. But of course I don’t have to use any at all! If you are more comfortable with the use of just a base oil e.g. cold pressed organic sunflower oil this is no problem in the slightest.
What will I be wearing for a treatment?
You can wear as much as you feel comfortable with, I can work around clothing! For a full body massage I will uncover the part of the body being massaged and the rest of you will be covered in soft towels, when it comes to changing position I can help by moving /holding towels or leave the room, and come back in when you are comfortably in the new position. Most of my clients will just leave on their pants enabling them to fully enjoy the aromatherapy massage.
Would an aromatherapy massage benefit me while trying to conceive?
Although there is no direct evidence that links the two, aromatherapy and massage have both been proven to reduce stress levels. Stress can interfere with getting pregnant and so by reducing your stress levels you are doing no harm. An aromatherapy massage will relax your body, give you time to relax and clear your mind all reducing stress and anxiety and hopefully increasing the chance of conception.
